Community Service

The IB’s goal of educating the whole person and fostering more caring and socially responsible attitudes comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their books.
The educational benefits of performing Community Service in the school community, and in the local, national and international communities.
Middle Years Programme Community Service Projects
MYP students at Westlake Academy are required to complete 30 hours of community service. This is an aspect of the Middle Years Program that runs throughout the years (grades 7-10.)
Some students take part in the Arbor Day festivities held every year in October. They spend the whole day helping out with the running of kids’ activities, serving in the Beverages Booth, assisting with the food court and the pony rides. Their attitudes and contributions are excellent and the day could not work as smoothly as it does without their great help.
We also have students participating in activities in their local community. Many are engaged in church outreach activities, while others are helping the elderly in their respective communities. Students also started a mentoring system in the school. Other activities have included: collecting shoes for local children in need, collecting blankets for Russian children in need, collecting items for Troops in Iraq, visiting soldiers in the airport before and after deployment, and so much more!
Diploma Programme: CAS
The creativity, action, service (CAS) requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a counterbalance to self-absorption some students may feel within a demanding school curriculum. The creative, physical, and social development of human beings can be shaped by their own experiences.
