Secondary

Head of Secondary Welcome

The Secondary School at Westlake Academy is comprised of grades 7-12 and encompasses two programs of the International Baccalaureate. Students in grades 7-10 are in enrolled in The Middle Years Programme and students in grades 11-12 are enrolled in The Diploma Programme. Both courses of study rely on guided inquiry to develop students into thinkers as well as learners and are designed to broaden their experience to include an International perspective in order to prepare them to become citizens of a global society. Assessments are criterion based and are constructed to focus on the cognitive process rather than rote learning. Community service is also an important part of the Secondary School and both programs have community service requirements that are part of our philosophy that we all have a pastoral duty to one another,

In addition to our academic programs, the Secondary School offers a number of extra-curricular activities, including sports activities at several different levels including volleyball, basketball, cross country and golf to name just a few. We also engage in statewide competitions in Science and Math and several of our students have had poetry published in national publications and won awards in local art competitions. These opportunities continue to grow as the school itself expands and more information can be found on our website under Extra Curricular Activities.

Students enrolled in the Secondary School are engaged in a challenging but rewarding curriculum and an environment that encourages personal responsibility and development. Margaret Mead once noted that: “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”  It is our hope that our students will join that “small group of committed citizens” who do, indeed, change the world.
